luuv - a trueSpace .OBJ file import/export plugin
Luuv is a plugin that enables import
and export of Wavefront .OBJ files and their corresponding
.MTL files directly from trueSpace. If your workflow uses
.OBJ files there should be no need to use external
translation programs.
The motivation for writing the
plugin was to support import and export for the purposes of
UV mapping (e.g. UVMapper). The Wavefront .OBJ
file format is nice for this because it does not require
the model to be triangulated - perfect for UV mapping
sub-division surface models.
Cost
It's free!
If you find any problem .OBJ files
or bugs then please
let me know (a copy of the file would be appreciated so
that the bug can be fixed).
Currently supported features
- Import of .OBJ and linked .MTL files, preserving
their UV coordinates. There is no support for
NURBS surfaces in .OBJ files.
- Translation of material settings by using the native
'Caligari phong', 'texture map' and 'bump map' shaders.
The plugin also supports texture map and bump map
references in .MTL files.
- Export of polyhedral models (not NURBs based ones),
with the generation of material files.
- Export of groups in polyhedral models.
- Export of groups in a model, broken up by each
material type in the model. This is useful for exporting
a model that's been painted with different materials to
isolate faces for UV mapping.
- Import of grouped models. Grouping can be turned off
so that a single 'merged' mesh can be imported.
- Under trueSpace versions greater than 5.1, if you
export a model that contains 'holes' the the faces are
triangulated to preserve the model's topology.
TutorialThere's a great tutorial on using Luuv
with Poser at Render-lab.
System requirements
- Internet explorer 4.01 or above (don't you just love
Windows).
Download the latest version:
How to use the plugin
- Left click to import a model.
- ALT-left click to export a model.
- Right click access help or modify options.
Installation
To install the plugin, run the
installation program and ensure that the plugin is placed
somewhere under the tsx directory. The installer should
find this folder by default.
